WE ARE YOUR
NEW MEXICO ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

A DUAL MISSION
MISSION STATEMENT
The New Mexico National Guard is a sustainable force that is ready to support the community and execute all federal and state missions. The New Mexico National Guard is a trusted and competent community-based organization that develops enduring relationships to meet the emerging needs of our state and nation.

A STORIED HISTORY OF THE NEW MEXICO ARMY NATIONAL GUARD
From the earliest history of New Mexico, the service of citizen-soldiers has remained a steadfast tradition. Our Native American ancestors of the ancient Pueblo clans in the north and the Hohokam in the south first settled the Land of Enchantment, hunting, gathering, farming, trading, and living in harmony while defending their lands when necessary against raiding tribes and, later, European encroachment. Early European settlers, arriving without standing armies, also took up arms to protect their families and communities. These citizen-warriors formed the first militias—civilians in peacetime, defenders in times of need. Today, the New Mexico Army National Guard continues that proud legacy, standing ready to safeguard freedom, lives, and property while strengthening our families, businesses, and communities.

LEADERSHIP OF THE NEW MEXICO ARMY NATIONAL GUARD
The New Mexico Army National Guard is led by The Adjutant General (TAG), who serves as the senior military advisor to the Governor and the de facto commander of the state’s military forces. This includes the New Mexico Army National Guard, Air National Guard, and any state defense forces. While TAG oversees military operations, they do not have authority over law enforcement agencies. Their duties are defined by the state constitution, statutes, and other directives, ensuring the readiness and effectiveness of the force. Additionally, TAG is responsible to the federal government for managing and maintaining federal assets assigned to the state.
